The Magic of Wood Sculpture
Organic materials and natural forms guide Nic Webb’s unique creations
Earth, clay, wood, and fire find their way into the works of British artist Nic Webb, whose handcrafted objects pay tribute to the beauty of organic forms. His form of wood sculpture is particularly impressive.
After studying painting at Brighton University, Webb decided to define the parameters of his own artistic vision by focusing on wood and clay as his primary tools. He is particularly drawn to the different varieties of fallen wood that he reimagines into beautiful objets d’art.
Webb’s unconventional sculptures, vessels, utensils, and decorative pieces celebrate the imperfect and unexpected elements of nature through cracks, splits, charred, and torched surfaces. Driven by the creative journey, he is allowing the material and the process to inform the outcome.
“Each step of our making is a choice,” he says. “We’re wise to learn from the choices we’ve made but wise also not to dwell too long on our wrong turns and mistakes.”
