There’s nothing like some new arm candy to lift winter-weary spirits, and with the hopeful glow of spring beckoning on the horizon, Louis Vuitton has it in the bag. The Maison’s Spring–Summer 2021 collection sees two newcomers to its extensive handbag lineage, each bringing their distinctive style to the mix.
First of the duo, the Rendez-Vous, expresses its romantic moniker in ladylike elegance, with a neo-classic design reminiscent of your girlhood diary. A buttery leather exterior conceals three compartments under a clasped flap. The golden clasp itself channels Vuitton’s heritage trunk locks, and the jacquard monogram lining imparts the brand’s iconic feel. A removable gold-tone engraved chain allows for flexible wear as a shoulder bag, crossbody, or handheld. Colour offerings span a classic palette of black, camel, or a lipstick-like red, along with several funkier options, like the playful gold-monogram embossed leather.
The other new arrival, aptly named Coussin, veers over to the less traditional side of the spectrum. Conceived by Artistic Director of Women’s Collections Nicolas Ghesquière as a reflection on the stylistic space between the feminine and the masculine, the effortlessly casual bag treads the gender divide, embracing a sense of fluid ambiguity.
An androgynously angular silhouette and medium size create a piece that’s about function as much as form. Dramatically divergent colour choices, ranging from classic darks and subtle metallics to bold brights, all in stamped monogrammed lambskin, appear to alternate between various personas, with the removable chunky chain or leather strap allowing for multiple carry options to make it an expression of individuality as unique as its wearer.
