Transforming Outdoor Spaces Into Works of Art
An interview with New York landscape architect Janice Parker.
The Beautiful Landscape Art of Janice Parker
Since 1984, Janice Parker has led a team of landscape architects and designers to conceive and install some of the most exceptional outdoor spaces in America and abroad. Parker is a board member of the New York Restoration Project and helped implement the Million Trees NYC initiative, alongside her work for private spaces. She combines a sincere love of nature with a keen eye for spatial composition and a remarkable ability to understand the needs of the people who inhabit the spaces.

Living art
The gardens of Janice Parker are living works of art, and—just like paintings—landscapes require thoughtful composition to create the right mood and experience. “You want harmony and visual rhythm.” Parker says. “So, it’s important even in a very busy, full cottage-type garden that you have to set up main focal points. The composition of the plants and the ridgeline, the big trees, small trees, and the rhythm of the outline need to be thoughtfully considered.”
