In 2000, Chanel’s Watchmaking Creation Studio announced its arrival with a strikingly original gesture: the J12. Named after a legendary racing sailboat, the watch introduced an oversized ceramic case, traditionally associated with men’s watches, into a sleek, feminine form. It quickly became one of the most iconic wristwatches of the 21st century.

Now, a quarter of a century later, the J12 has returned in two diamonddrenched incarnations that feel less like variations than like luminous revelations.

CHANEL J12 1
The J12 Diamond Tourbillon Caliber 5, where Chanel’s first flying tourbillon meets the brilliance of baguette-cut diamonds.

The first is the J12 Diamond Tourbillon Caliber 5, limited to just 12 pieces, an appropriately celestial number. This is Chanel’s first-ever mechanical tourbillon, and the house has approached the complication with characteristic theatrical flair.

CHANEL J12 4

Designed by Arnaud Chastaingt, the dial is a hypnotic vortex of baguettecut diamonds that appear to converge and orbit around the flying tourbillon itself. As the cage rotates, the diamonds whirl in slow, mesmerizing procession, joined at the centre by a specially cut 65-facet diamond that spins in perfect sync with the passing seconds. It is a miniature galaxy in motion. The technical demands were immense: more than six months of painstaking gem-setting and calibration to achieve the fluid, weightless effect.

The J12 28 MM Diamonds

Its smaller sibling, the J12 28 MM Diamonds, offers a different but equally compelling poetry. Set entirely in white gold and pavéed with baguette-cut diamonds, the diminutive case required 215 hours of meticulous handwork. On the wrist it feels like liquid light, a shimmering river of stones that catches and releases brilliance with every subtle movement.

The art of gem-setting the J12 Diamond Tourbillon Caliber 5, where each diamond is carefully positioned by hand to achieve perfect harmony.

Both watches pay unapologetic homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s lifelong obsession with diamonds, the only gemstone she considered worthy of true reverence. Yet they are not nostalgic exercises. They are forward glances, proof that the J12, that most modern of icons, still has new ways to catch the light.
