“To be lucky, you have to believe in luck.”
—Jacques Arpels
The Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alhambra motif—a symbol of luck—has been a signature of the brand since its debut in 1968. “To be lucky, you have to believe in luck,” famously said Jacques Arpels, nephew of Estelle Arpels.
Upholding Arpels’ legacy, the Alhambra has continually evolved with innovative materials and designs. This year, the collection introduces two new pieces that elevate sophistication: the Sweet Alhambra watch and the Vintage Alhambra reversible ring, complemented by a matching pendant and earrings, all showcasing the Maison’s renowned craftsmanship.
The new collection is defined by the sophisticated pairing of the deep luster of guilloché yellow gold with the rich blue hues of agate. Blue agate, introduced to the Alhambra collection in 1989, is known for its translucent quality and the challenges of working with its delicate microcrystalline structure.
The selection process is rigorous, ensuring that only stones with intense colour, purity, and a smooth, lustrous surface are chosen. The subtle natural variations in opacity within each stone are meticulously matched, adding a distinctive touch to every piece.
Contrasting the agate is yellow gold featuring the guilloché technique, a Van Cleef & Arpels hallmark since the early 20th century. This technique imparts a sunburst effect to the gold, enhancing its light-catching properties, while the beaded contour frames each motif, accentuating the contrast between the colours.
The new Alhambra reversible ring plays double duty with its innovative design: one side features guilloché yellow gold set with a diamond, while the other displays blue agate. The ring’s mechanism is precisely engineered for smooth rotation, with the central design secured by rows of cascading golden beads. Each component is meticulously assembled by hand to ensure precision and comfort.
The guilloché gold and blue agate shine again in the Sweet Alhambra watch, set within a beaded structure with rounded prongs expertly folded down by skilled artisans for a seamless finish. The craftsmanship involves fifteen intricate steps, from selecting the stones to the final polishing. By infusing the traditional motif with the mystical charm of blue agate, Van Cleef & Arpels offers a fresh perspective on this beloved classic.
