Traditional Chinese Symbols Come Alive in Vacheron Constantin’s Newest Métiers d’Art Collection

Deeply rooted in symbolism, ancient Chinese culture finds new expression in Vacheron Constantin’s limited-edition Métiers d’Art—Tribute to Traditional Symbols collection.

Crafted in collaboration with Mr. Song, former Associate Research Librarian at the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City, this series is an amalgamation of artistry and history, offering a window into the grandeur of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Central to the collection is the “Seawater Cliff” motif gracing the dials, a symbol once featured prominently in imperial decor and ceremonial dragon robes. This image of waves crashing against cliffs evokes the power, resilience, and stability of the emperor’s reign, translating centuries of tradition into exquisite horological art.

The watch dials, created in two versions, are a testament to the maison’s artistry. The first captures the ancient Chinese technique of cloisonné enameling, where over 220 gold wires trace an intricate design, cradling layers of rich, luminous enamel. Fired multiple times to reveal its vivid hues, each piece undergoes over 120 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, a tribute to both tradition and time itself.

The second version, in gold, features Grand Feu enamel, engraved to evoke the texture of water. Diamond-set tides frame the scene, while the mountains are intricately engraved and accented with tone-on-tone champlevé enamel for added depth and dimension.

The bezel receives further refinement, hand-engraved with a bat motif symbolizing happiness and good fortune. The intricate frieze of bats encircling the bezel pays homage to the ancient Chinese concept of the “Five Good Fortunes”—longevity, wealth, stability, virtue, and happiness.

Powered by an in-house movement engraved to reflect the wave motifs and featuring a gold rotor, these masterpieces fuse the maison’s watchmaking expertise with ancient Chinese heritage, transforming each piece into a cultural treasure and a wearable work of art.
