Few items are as synonymous with the Louis Vuitton name as the pedestrian steamer trunk, transformed by the renowned luxury brand from a humble luggage piece into a refined and coveted object. Craftspeople meticulously craft each trunk: hand-stretching canvas and leather over wooden frames, employing time-honoured techniques and novel designs.
In keeping with this storied tradition, it’s only natural that the latest Louis Vuitton trunk, the Cabinet of Curiosities, is a creatively conceived masterpiece. Unveiled at Milan Design Week 2023, the collectible piece by Mark Newson is the latest of the designer’s collaborations with Vuitton. Among these are the Wonder Trunk, the 2014 Monogram rucksack, the Horizon luggage, and the revisited Pégase luggage designs.
Paying homage to the classic hard-sided Louis Vuitton trunk, the Cabinet of Curiosities adds a playful, distinct dimension. Available in three colourways, the whimsical piece features an intriguing setup. Inside, the modular design is made up of 19 removable leather storage cubes available in natural, red, green and blue, or yellow colour options. The cubes can be arranged into a variety of configurations to suit every need, with hidden compartments at the back to stash away treasures.
In keeping with the visually engaging style, the monogrammed exterior showcases Vuitton’s signature pattern and toned-down palette, a contrast to the burst of colours inside.
“It’s a simple idea, a utilitarian and iconic object that gives the user the opportunity to do whatever they want with it,” Newson says.
The piece further exemplifies how Louis Vuitton has remained committed to its legacy of upholding exacting standards while constantly innovating.
