Twenty workshops and artisans; over 25,200 craft hours; two precious birds; one extraordinary work of horological art. Such is the spectacle of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Fontaine aux Oiseaux automaton—a mesmerizing masterpiece of clockmaking.
The intricacies of the piece are masterful, beginning with a polished wooden base shaped like a water basin, where water lilies and dragonflies appear to dance. Two golden love birds perch daintily, their vibrant plumage sparkling with colourful jewels. When set in motion, the automaton’s delicate scene springs to life. The water ripples gently as a water lily blooms, and a dragonfly flutters. The birds then awaken in an astonishingly lifelike display–moving their heads, wings, and legs. As the scene draws to a close, the dragonfly returns to its resting place, the birds resume their initial poses, and the lily folds its petals. This intricate performance is a testament to mechanical precision and artistic mastery.
