Two centuries is a long time to stay in business, especially in fashion. To survive for so long requires something exceptional: an ability to evolve, a farsighted vision, an uncompromising commitment to absolute quality, and a different understanding of what it means to be a luxury brand.

Brun de Vian-Tiran checks all these boxes. As the oldest active cloth-weaving factory in France, the maison traces its roots back to Napoleon’s empire. Over the course of the subsequent two centuries, it has transformed noble fibres into heirloom-quality knitwear and left an indelible mark on the culture of French fabric-making.

As the eighth-generation leader of his family’s business, Jean-Louis Brun is both the steward of the present enterprise and the curator of its traditions. A multidisciplinary innovator with degrees in agricultural engineering and oenology, as well as a PhD in linguistics, he brings an almost philosophical perspective to the business of luxury, and his company’s role within it.

“Our idea is [to be] like a great wine,” Brun muses. “You look at a wine label and you immediately know where it comes from and when it was made. The same is true for us. [Customers] know we are based in the south of France, in a specific town. And they all have the memory of the first time they encountered our products—it’s linked to a time and a place. These are the reference points that make something true.”

This idea of “truth” lies at the heart of Brun’s philosophy. While many luxury brands rely on name recognition, logos, or the mere aura of exclusivity, Brun believes such ideas fall short of honouring his company’s deep reverence for quality and craftsmanship.
