Weekend Max Mara turned to renowned architect and designer Patricia Urquiola to co-create Habito, its 10th Signature Collection for Fall Winter 2022–23.
Translating as either ‘habit’ or ‘to inhabit’ in Spanish, the line presents an ‘emotional habitat,’ bringing Urquiola’s experience of designing interior spaces to clothing.
“My approach as an architect and designer is visible [in the collection], especially through the combination of materials, colors, textures, patterns and graphics,” Urquiola says.
Her focus is on hybrid pieces that defy rigid categorization. Boundaries blend between coats and quilted jackets, blouses and knits in a multi-functional approach that makes for easy dressing.
“Garments are designed for everyday life, for traveling, yet all with a unique personality,” Urquiola says.
Weekend Max Mara’s iconic wide-cut, roomy silhouettes take center stage. Coats profile prominently as cocoon shapes and oversized knits are reinterpreted in combos of traditional wool and technical nylon.
“I designed Habito thinking about the women I know, about their daily necessities, but it’s also a collection I would personally wear.”
Accessories bring in a rugged, dynamic touch to the collection with fringe, lug soles, and 3D effect handbags. Urquiola also doesn’t shy away from the use of color, whether in bold accents, color blocking, or gradient washes.
The vibrant hemlines, generous folds, and voluminous forms echo traditional Spanish garments in a tribute to the designer’s cultural heritage.
Urquiola was particularly inspired by the details of men’s waistcoats, such as the padded hems and fabric folds.
The new collection is now available for viewing at the Max Mara Weekend Store.
