The 1930s were a formative decade for Gabrielle Chanel and her couture legacy, and it’s the decade CHANEL creative director Virginie Viard turned to for the Fall-Winter 2022/23 Haute Couture collection.
“There are suits, long dresses like Mademoiselle Chanel imagined them in the 1930s,” Viard says.
Fitted silhouettes, strong shoulder lines, and pleated dresses are prominent in a palette of bright greens, khaki, beige, and pink, with plenty of the brand’s signature black and silver.
A nod to the 1970s is also evident in the use of geometric shapes and graphic patterns, which Viard breaks up with a softer natural look.
CHANEL’s unrivalled haute couture savoir-faire takes the spotlight in the intricate details—from elaborate embroidery to inlaid lace.
The accessories, meanwhile, make their own statement. Jewelry is drawn from CHANEL’s anniversary 1932 High Jewelry collection, echoing the Bijoux de Diamants collection created in 1932 by Mademoiselle Chanel.
