Behind Chanel’s Opera-Inspired Couture Extravaganza
A private peek into the savoir-faire behind Chanel's dazzling Fall-Winter 2024/25 Haute Couture Show
Paris’ majestic Palais Garnier is a beacon of opera, steeped in the history and magic of this dramatic art form. In alignment with Chanel’s longstanding commitment to supporting the performing arts, it was only fitting that the Fall-Winter 2024/25 haute couture show unfolded within the grandiose walls of the Palais Garnier. The collection paid tribute to the opera world, reinterpreting Chanel’s iconic patterns with a theatrical flair.

The show, which showcased the talents of over 150 haute couture ateliers and the artistic vision of the Fashion Creation Studio, was a spectacular interplay of textures, colours, and historical references. It opened with a sweeping navy blue taffeta cape, exuding regal elegance with its flounced smocked collar. Beneath it, an ecru wool jersey bustier and brief set featured ornate embroidery, beaded tassels, and smocked braids.

A symphony of textures—tweeds, plush velvets, illusion tulle, taffeta, and duchesse satin—wove through long coats, voluminous capes, and elegant evening gowns. The colour palette, inspired by theatrical codes, featured black and ivory, gold and silver, as well as fuchsia and pastel pink, with finishes ranging from matte to glossy lacquer. Details like puffed sleeves and pleated flounces suggested movement, enhanced by playful trims such as feathers, tassels, and embroidered florals.
