Art and fashion have forever been intertwined in a graceful dance of creativity and beauty. The four dazzling couture gowns we feature below are great examples of aesthetic art. Imbued with the grace and elegance of the artistic masterpieces they parallel, they’re icons of femininity that have stood as inspirational visions for generations.

Left:
This delicate Romanticism-era painting, Spring, also known as Flora by artist Edward Burne-Jones presents spring as an allegorical female in an Italianate setting. The figure, draped in green silks, is typical of the artist, who was popular in the 1880s for his Pre-Raphaelite-like paintings.

Right:
This dramatic evening gown is part of the Ramadan collection by RASARIO, a label favored by red-carpet regulars for its glamorous evening wear. The opulent dress is made from green crepe-back satin and showcases a draped skirt and nipped-in silhouette. The dress is finished with theatrical kimono sleeves, a fitting tribute to aesthetic art.

This ostrich-feather dress from the 1960s is worn by model Ann Chapman. The photograph was taken by Athol Shmith and is on display at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Right:
The voluminous midi skirt of this Jenny Packham dress is made from luxurious faux fur in a rich shade of midnight navy and is topped with a glittering sequined bodice.

Left:
Housed today in the Capitole de Toulouse, the painting La Belle Paule by Henri Rachou depicts the young and graceful Paule de Viguier. Legend has it that the 16th century French noblewoman was given this nickname by King Francis I for her great beauty, which gathered crowds and even sparked riots.

Right:
Echoing the noblewoman’s blue dress, this long belted gown of blue silk from New York fashion house Sachin & Babi features a fluid yet streamlined silhouette, accented with an embroidered floral motif on the front.

Aesthetic-Art-4

Left:
The fresh and youthful portrait of Ilona Lippich is depicted in the delicate Spring (1894) painting by Karoly Lotz. Evoking the ambiance of end-of-the-century English portraits, the painting, a beautiful example of aesthetic art, features the figure against a landscape backdrop, dressed in a white ruffled gown and holding a wildflower bouquet. Presented by Hungarian National Gallery.

Right:
Zimmerman‘s high tide lace midi dress summons the gentle femininity of Spring with a lace frilled frock in a soft shade of lemon yellow, detailed with tulle and a flower. The delicately flowing lines recall the fluid curves of the model’s figure in Lotz’s portrait painting.
