Blurring the boundaries between apartment and gallery, an intriguing new pied-à-terre in the West Village is enriched by its collection of visual art. The result? A truly remarkable living space.

Under the leadership of SoHo firm Jessica Schuster Design, a rising star in the world of interiors, the project took shape within a two-bed, three-bathroom unit located in a revamped industrial warehouse building on 90 Morton in Manhattan, New York.
The company’s young eponymous founder has a penchant for dreaming up highly original spaces that celebrate artistry. The client, himself a passionate art collector, was seeking a modern yet laidback escape in the heart of the city, one that could act as a suitable display space for his many artworks while also retaining the characteristic charms of the area’s classic architecture.

As a starting point for her creative approach, Schuster looked to the sombre aesthetic of avant-garde fashion designer Rick Owens. A palette of lunar tones thus lends sophistication to the space, while dark-hued materials, such as charcoal-coloured painted plaster and char-dyed reclaimed mushroom wood, heighten the effect.
